A talk just given at the 28th Chaos Communication Congress by Karsten Nohl and Luca Melette summarizes how and why cell phone users face these days “an increasing frequency and depth of privacy intruding attacks”. The slides, downloadable here, explain how and why, among other things:
- GSM networks provide the base for various attacks
- Fraud can happen through mobile impersonation
- Cracking GSM requires both a weak cipher and predictable transactions
proving once more (as if it were still necessary!) the need for systems like the one proposed by TFF, User Verifiable Social Telematics.
